New York Yankees and Mets Pitching Acquisitions
Posted by Charles Mitri Categories: New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Editorials, Trades
It took some fancy footwork and a bundle of buckaroos but the New York Yankees landed top pitching free agent, C.C. Sabathia, to a record shattering seven-year $161 million dollar contract. The Steinbrenners and general manager Brian Cashman enlisted the help of Hall of Famer and former Yankees great Reggie Jackson to ice the deal. Reggie of course was only too happy to - pardon the pun - “pitch” his glory days in the Bronx to Sabathia. Well, it’s the thought that counts, right? Go waving around a $23 million dollar a year contract and it’s a pretty safe bet that that player’s agent will recommend that his client sign on the dotted line.
The advent of Sabathia now gives the Bronx Bombers a number of pluses. The Yanks can readily move at least five games from the loss column over to the win column. C.C. is a knock out punch with a blazing fastball, nasty curve and a better than average slider. He’ll easily log 200 innings, 18 wins, 200+ strikeouts and a low WHIP (walks and hits to innings pitched). With Joba Chamberlain and Mariano Rivera waiting in the wings for the last two frames, the Yanks will be tough to beat when Sabathia is on the hill.
With Sabathia safely under contract, the also signed A.J. Burnett to a five-year, $82.5 million contract. Problem, however, is Burnett only seems to post good numbers in his option years. Burnett has a history of grinding Yankee bats into a fine mulch as he did with the Florida Marlins in the ’03 World Series and the last couple of years with the Toronto Blue Jays, which is one minor reason to bring him into the fold. Most of the time though he resembles an average pitcher who struts his stuff in walk years. With Burnett signing on for a tour of duty in the Bronx, unless he pitches his heart out every five days, there will always be lingering doubts if the Yankees management did the right thing in signing him to a multi-year deal.
From the files of “Enjoy It While You Got It” is World Series MVP Cole Hamels. Hamel recently calling N.L. East rivals, the New York Mets “choke artists.” Uh huh. Now that Mr. Hamel’s team the Philadelphia Phillies have logged their second World Championship in, oh, 126 years, maybe he’s thinking that gives him the right to go mouthing off in the press. It’s gonna be a long wait before the Phillies hoist another championship flag now that the Mets have signed lights out closer Francisco “K-Rod” Rodriguez and traded for J.J. Putz. The next choking sound you hear will come from the City of Brotherly Love. Signing K-Rod means that the Phillies will no longer have the luxury of waiting for the Mets to lose the division in the last month of the regular season In ’09 the Phillies will have to actually go out and win the NL East crown.
Don’t hold your breath.

Didn’t have your coffee this morning, huh?
Pretty simple here…and this coming from a Mets fan. I hold no grudge against Cole Hamels (you might get his name right if you’re pretending to talk with authority) and I think all Mets fans would have to agree He has every right to call the Mets choke artists. We did. Its called bragging rights.

Gee thanks for the concern about my morning coffee. I know all about bragging rights and cute little sayings like “to the victor goes the spoils” and “a day late and a dollar short.” My paragraph wasn’t ABOUT telling the truth—its about The Mets having their collectvie NOSES RUBBED IN IT. Ever watch a team that has been embarrassed? They take special pleasure in STICKING IT to their opponent. I’m NOT a Mets fan but even you have to admit that their bullpen blew the NL East Crown in ‘07 and ‘08 and its not like the Phillies ran away with the division. The advent of K-Rod makes the Mets the top choice to win the NL East crown in ‘09. Mr HAMELS (happy?) is going to be in for a VERY BAD TIME when he goes up against the Mets NEXT season. I stand by my remarks.

Corey Hamel??? Waht are you ...an idiot who just got a job doing sports articles??
You stupid moron, what do you do know about baseball? you should write for some supermarket tabloid and leave sports to real men.
Let me clue you in dumbass, the yanks and the mets have been throwing cash out for years now…only the yanks can say it’s paid off. As good as their teams are, they haven’t won squat in this decade….leaving thmeselves open to the critics. They’re prepared for this…who are you to piss on the phils? They beat the mets out for years now…have half the payroll, no egos running rampant and have a half ass rotation…...but THEY PLAY LIKE A TEAM. You better hope the yanks-mets can pull out something this year or they’ll be more boooooooo’s coming from the N.Y stands.
Meanwhile, why don’t you go write for some gossip magazine you queer.

By the way…A-Rod, K-Rod, Jeter and Santana are all queers.
Like you. So go play with your friends, you fag.

I am not a fan of either team, but the Phillies are the world champs, Hamels, the MVP, can say whatever he wants.
And the Mets have been favored to win the division the last two years, and each time they lost the lead late in the season. Most sports fans would agree they choked.
I think you are more upset that Hamels is right.

Sorry to disappoint you Jim, but I’m not a Mets fan. Nor am I upset about Hamels’ comments. However if he’s going to make those kind of remarks I’m going to respond to them. Free country right? We all have freedom of speech and the right to express our opinions. I’m excersing that right. Nothing more.
This is the real issue. Even Ruben Amaro, Phils GM admitted that the Mets have vastly improved their bullpen by signing K-Rod and Putz. K-Rod is a proven winner and will make the Mets very hard to beat in ‘09. Plus the Phils have won A Series crown—their second in 126 years. Makes them like every other team in this decade. Only the Red Sox have managed to win twice. No question the Mets choked the last two years but this year on the last day of the season. Not exactly a blow out. Rubbing someone’s nose in it is NEVER a good idea. Gives a team that much more incentive to STICK IT to their opponent the following year. In short I have valid reasons for all my comments and I stand by them.

Now isn’t THAT a bright observation. I know more about baseball than you could learn in TEN lifetimes and I can do it without resorting to childish name calling and slurs. Name the starting 9 of the ‘64 champs St. Louis Cardinals. Who is the only surviving member of the ‘29 Cubs? What is the single most prolific inning of scoring in Series history? What are the original nicknames of the Red Sox and Astros? Where did the Astros play before moving into the Astrodome? Who is the only member of the ‘19 Black Sox in the Hall of Fame? Name the year that the entire National League averaged .301. What year is known as the pitcher’s revenge? Who is the last player to win the Triple Crown and what were his stats for the season?
By the way I’m a retired athlete. Bench press 400. Run 7 miles a day. Went to college on an academic scholarship. Scored 1390 on the SATs. Name a time and a place and SHOW you a REAL man.
Clearly you have missed the point. The paragraph in question didn’t even mention salaries and the remainder of the article mentions salaries THREE times. Strike one. For years they’ve been beating the Mets? So where are the World Championships to prove it? They’ve got ONE. Strike two. Playing like a team? Gee that’s impressive! Right up there with winning the Little League World Series. Before picking up your crayon to write another letter get the facts straight.
